Old Rivalries Rekindled

The Belle Vue Colts will reignite old rivalries ahead of their tasty tussle on Friday night when the Cradley Heathens finally make the journey to Manchester to face off against their close rivals.

Competition between the two sides has been fabled for being fierce and with the Cool Running Colts looking to round off their maiden season at a new home on a high, sparks are sure to fly!

The Black Country-based outfit command a powerful core of British youngsters, starting with spearhead Ashley Morris who, surprisingly, has not featured in any top flight berth this year!

Unfortunately, his fellow heat leaders Luke Chessell and recently crowned National League Riders Champion Max Clegg will not be joining him in Manchester, with a duo of guests set to cover.

Nathan Greaves, well known to Belle Vue fans this season, will substitute for the injured Chessell at No.3 while Tom Perry comes in at No.5 to deputise for Clegg who is on duty with Edinburgh.

Moving into the second string, Cradley received bad news mid-season when it emerged that No.4 James Purchase’s year was over after suffering a shoulder injury, unfortunately requiring surgery.

The club will operate the Rider Replacement facility for him while his team mate at No.2, former Eastbourne rider Richard Andrews, continues to make strides after breaking his scaphoid in April.

Joining them at reserve are youngsters Ben Basford – who commenced his professional career last season with Buxton and Kent – and Bradley Andrews, who hails from New Zealand.

On the home front, R/R will be in operation for Dan Bewley who is still sidelined due to ongoing injury problems while Jack Smith steps in at No.4 for broken collarbone victim Rob Shuttleworth.

Co-promoter George Carswell said: “Despite the fact they have riders missing, Cradley have got a very strong team and have certainly chosen their guests well for our meeting on Friday night.

“Max Clegg is a man in form right now but even without him they are not to be underestimated, after all Nathan Greaves has guested for us quite a few times and has a very good record here.

“We will also be covering for missing or injured riders with guests of our own and it’s pretty much confirmed now that Dan Bewley’s situation is in fact season-ending, so we of course wish him well.

“We are understrength but absolutely feel we can give them a run for their money. These two clubs have history that spans back decades so it goes without saying that we’re in for a great meeting.”

In addition to this National League spectacle, there will be a Cycle Speedway demonstration taking place trackside from 7pm featuring three teams from Stockport, Bury and Astley & Tyldesley.
