Aces Aim To Seal The Deal

The Belle Vue Aces will take an 8-point lead into Leg 2 of their Play Off Semi-Final with Lakeside on Monday when the two clubs meet at the National Speedway Stadium for the final time this year.

The loss of Andreas Jonsson with just weeks to go before the Play Offs came as a monstrous blow to the Vortex Hammers who have painfully teetered on the edge of top-four qualification for a while.

The 36-year old was involved in a terrible smash in Sweden on September 6 in which he suffered broken ribs, a broken thumb and a broken collarbone. His injuries effectively ended his season.

The club has been forced to utilise the guest facility ever since, recently borrowing Belle Vue’s own skipper Scott Nicholls for their all-or-nothing clash with the Swindon Robins down in Thurrock.

His efforts proved instrumental in the Purfleet outfit’s last-ditch attempt to qualify through to the Play Off Semi-Finals where they were selected by the Rentruck Aces as their opponent of choice.

With Jonsson ruled out, it will be outgoing Coventry rider Chris Harris who guests at No.1 for the Hammers on Monday while new signing Robert Branford rides at No.6 in place of Ben Morley.

Both sides otherwise remain as programmed, with the Rentruck Aces tracking the full-strength septet that so dramatically recovered from their early-meeting deficit in Leg 1 last Wednesday.

Club asset Steve Worrall said: “It was a great all-round performance at Lakeside. Obviously Max and Joe didn’t have the best of nights but they’ve promised to go through the card on Monday!

“There are a couple of changes to the Hammers this time but personally I don’t feel it’ll affect our game plan. Robert Branford has shown great potential as well as what he can do around here.

“Chris Harris, though he hasn’t had the best of meetings at this place, can really turn it up when it matters so neither of these guys are to be underestimated, and likewise with the rest of their team.

“We’re not going into this thinking it’s going to be easy. Nothing is set in stone and I’m sure the Lakeside boys felt that having established their lead at home they just had to keep us at bay.

“But of course we came on strong towards the end to really turn things around and there’s nothing to suggest they won’t do the same to us. There’s no room for complacency in the Play Offs.

“We’re going to approach this as we would any other meeting and provided we knuckle down and keep cool, hopefully we can finish the job and see ourselves through to the Grand Final.”
