Lemon: 'Craven Field is Wide Open'

Belle Vue’s Director of Speedway Mark Lemon believes that the field he has assembled for the upcoming Peter Craven Memorial on April 1 will more than do justice to the legendary rider.

The club has honoured the memory of the original ‘Wizard of Balance’ with the prestigious event since his passing in 1963, with many synonymous Aces taking the chequered flag in his name.

This year is no exception, and in a very short space of time Lemon has brought together a powerful ensemble of talent that is sure to guarantee fans a thoroughly entertaining evening of speedway.

He said: “The Peter Craven Memorial has always been a fantastic meeting that has attracted some top quality line ups, and has been well acknowledged down the years since his passing in 1963.

“This year we had our own challenges to face in anticipation of opening our season with this great evening of racing, the first and foremost being to get ourselves and the business up and running.

“But it’s the same with every club when they return to the tapes in the wake of winter. I believe it to be a top quality field that will greet the fans on Saturday and we genuinely can’t wait to get racing.”

As well as boasting riders who possess significant connections to the Belle Vue Aces, the line-up for Saturday’s season opener also carries a wealth of experience and a strong international flavour.

“The headline act is of course our former No.1 Matej Žagar, says Lemon. “To watch, he is just unbelievable to witness on a motorbike, particularly around the National Speedway Stadium.

“He’s said many a time that this is his favourite track. He’s looking forward to coming back and I’m sure that like us, the fans can’t wait to welcome him back and to see him race here one more time.

“The rest of the field is equally impressive in my eyes. There’s a real blend of talent and abilities. For example, we have the World U-21 Champion Max Fricke and former GP rider Troy Batchelor.

“There’s so many top quality guys in this field, all of whom are capable of raising that prestigious trophy. There’s no doubt it’s going to be an exciting and competitive event. Bring on Saturday!”
