Captain Cook

Craig Cook has been handed the Belle Vue Aces captaincy as the team prepares to commence their 2017 campaign on April 5, when they head to Poole for Leg 1 of their Knock Out Cup encounter.

The 29-year old takes over from outgoing skipper, seven-time British Champion, Scott Nicholls and is already aiming to help bring out the best in his new team mates for the upcoming season and more.

The long-serving Aces rider is preparing for his seventh season in Mancunian colours and says his first impressions of the rebooted Belle Vue Aces after the club’s press day are very encouraging.

He said: “I’ve got a great feeling about this team. They’re a good bunch of lads and we’re already familiar with each other, certainly for myself, Justin [Sedgmen], Max [Fricke] and Steve [Worrall].

“We rode together at Edinburgh a few years ago and I’m confident we can ignite that same chemistry amongst the entire team here at Belle Vue. It’s going to be a great season.

“Gelling with your fellow riders is the key to any successful club. It’s a team effort and if we want to win the league title this year, it’ll take all of us to pull it off. I believe we’re capable of doing it.

“We have got some younger guys to look after with Dan [Bewley] and Jack [Smith] at reserve. Dan is almost my neighbour and he’s already shown a great deal of potential in the last 12 months.

“Jack is not someone I’m familiar with but we talked on press day and he seems a good kid. He’s switched on, he’s enthusiastic and with his father [Andy Smith] helping him, he can’t go wrong.”

The next week holds little time to relax for Cook and his squad, with a second away fixture at Swindon on April 6 before they return home for Leg 2 of their KOC clash with the Pirates on April 7.

Cook continued: “It’s all in a day’s work for us. I personally prefer to be busy, certainly at this point in the year because it prepares you for what’s yet to come mid-season.

“We’ve put the past few months behind us now. We’re all keen to brush off the cobwebs, get on track and do what we do best but most importantly, I want us to get out there and enjoy our racing."
