Colts Go Top

A solid day’s work at the office saw the Belle Vue ‘Cool Running’ Colts move top of the National League table after picking up a maximum four-points from their 31-59 win at Buxton.
Fans turned out in droves to the picturesque Derbyshire countryside for this somewhat ‘local’ derby where the ‘Addison Engineering’ Hitmen were hoping to secure their first league points of the year.
But not even the talents of ex-Belle Vue captain, Matt Williamson, could prevent his former team from hitting the ground running and the ‘Cool Running’ Colts soon commanded the afternoon.

Colts Captain Lee Payne

Andy Mellish put in a commendable performance to come away with 9+2, his biggest score so far this season, and it was a proud moment for Luke Woodhull, who recorded his first NL race win.
The talented 15-year old said: “Buxton has different shale to most places I’ve been to and it’s much smaller than Belle Vue, but it’s just another one of those things me and my brother have to learn.
“In the first heat my throttle stuck open on the last lap which is why I fell off. The bike collected a lot of muck in the belt drive when that happened and it snapped when I went out for my second ride.
“It was a bit of a struggle initially but I was getting loads of help from Mark Lemon and everyone, and in the end I got things set up and I managed to get a win in my last ride which was great!”
Team captain, Lee Payne, contributed 11+2 to his side’s victory over the Hitmen and couldn’t hide his delight at the solid performance of all his teammates to secure maximum points from their trip.
He said: “A lot of our boys have only been here once or twice and it’s a really tricky track to get to grips with. But everyone had an awesome meeting and I’m really proud of my team today.
“We were confident we could produce the goods and I don’t think we put in more than a couple of last places. That’s key to any victory, avoiding last places, so I’m really chuffed with the result.”
The Cool Running Colts now look to cement their place at the top of the table when they take on Lakeside at the National Speedway Stadium on Wednesday, April 10.
