Valiant Colts Take A Point

The Belle Vue Colts put in a valiant 47-43 performance at Mildenhall on Sunday to take a consolation point and extend their lead at the top of the National League table to three points.

Kyle Bickley caused a sharp intake of breath across the visiting pits after a gnarly tangle in Heat 7 where the opposing No.6 Sam Woods clattered into him seconds after the 15-year old also fell.

Thankfully there didn’t appear to be any lasting effects for the Belle Vue rider, who went on to score 6 points from his afternoon, though Woods was withdrawn from the meeting on medical grounds.

With eight heats completed the Cool Running Colts had plenty of work to do to recover a 10-point deficit, which was cut down to six in Heat 9 with a 1-5 from Andy Mellish and guest Georgie Wood.

Jack Smith and Dan Bewley hit double figures once again for the visitors and team boss Graham Goodwin says he’s delighted with the result given the unexpected circumstances to hit his side.

He said: “We went to Mildenhall in the same frame of mind as we always do and the boys put in 100% effort. Still, it was a huge blow to lose both Rob and Lee on the eve of such a big meeting.

“As soon as we heard they’d crashed we were on the phone most of Saturday night and only secured our guest, Georgie Wood, at midnight but he came into the team and did a brilliant job.

“We’re delighted to come away from Mildenhall with a point. That would’ve been the case in any circumstances given how strong they are at home, but Sunday’s performance was exceptional.

“Even with a last-minute guest and a rider replacement facility in effect, the whole team took it in their stride and mucked in with what needed to be done. We’re very proud of their achievement.”

Belle Vue round off their bank holiday at Cradley on May 29 when they face the Motor Market Heathens. Tickets for their home meeting on May 31 are available at
