Depleted Colts Soldier On Against Kings

Kent’s 46-32 dominance of a patched-up Belle Vue side was marred by a nasty crash in Heat 14 that saw proceedings abandoned early after Kings rider Bradley Andrews was taken to hospital.

The home team were heavily fancied after the Cool Running Colts confirmed their top three - Dan Bewley, Jack Smith and Lee Payne - would be unavailable for the trip south to Sittingbourne.

It proved a tough night for the visitors, who were buoyed by the inspirational performances of Rob Shuttleworth and guest rider Danny Ayres. But the younger team members found the going tough.

Kyle Bickley and Luke Woodhull had a nightmare of a night between them, each taking a few tumbles while thankfully being able to walk away; though they were clearly frustrated.

Woodhull found himself unable to avoid a downed Andrews in the penultimate race after the former fell in front of him, and with the track ambulance bound for A&E the meeting was halted.

Team boss Graham Goodwin said: “It wasn’t the best of starts for us. We lost our original guest Jon Armstrong last night so we had to quickly grab Tom Brennan ahead of the meeting.

“Then on the way to Kent there was a huge lorry fire on the M11 which delayed a considerable number of the boys, but kudos to them they arrived in the nick of time and got on with the job.

“It was a tough night for us. Kent are so dialled into this track that was never in doubt. We wanted to at least come away with a point and though things didn’t go our way the lads never gave up.

“There were a few incidents in which a couple of our guys came down but thankfully it was nothing too serious, and we of course wish Bradley Andrews well after his fall in Heat 14.

“We’re not despondent with this result. We’re comfortably in the top four and so can afford one minor glitch. We just need to regroup and recover for the next one on Friday against Cradley.”

The Cool Running Colts take a break from league action to face Cradley in the Knock Out Cup this Friday, September 8. Tickets on sale now at www.bellevueaces.co or from the stadium ticket office.
