Colts Are National League No.1

The Belle Vue Colts completed a flawless league campaign at the National Speedway Stadium after overpowering the Eastbourne Eagles 57-33 with a masterclass of skill in Manchester.

The top three teams in the league - Eastbourne, Belle Vue and Kent - were all in action on Saturday and all vying to round off their night at the top of the National League table.

A win for the Cool Running Colts afforded them only limited control of their destiny as the result at Loomer Road, where Stoke clashed with the Kings, would dictate the overall ranking order.

And the Potters, in preventing their opponents winning by 7 or more, ensured the honours went to the Mancunians, meaning they now have choice of whom they face in the play off semi-finals.

Rob Shuttleworth, the substitute skipper, dominated the score charts with 13+2 while Kyle Bickley bagged 13+1 and guest duo Liam Carr and Ben Wilson contributed 11+2 and 10+2 respectively.

On who he might consider as his choice of semi-final opponent Shuttleworth was reserved, commenting: “We’ve got an idea of who we want to pick but we’re going to sleep on it.

“For now, we’re taking stock of what a fantastic season we’ve had so far and Saturday’s win was another remarkable milestone for us, and Eastbourne gave us a really good meeting.

“They have some quite big hitters in their team and I wouldn’t say we caught them on a bad night. I think it’d be more accurate to say it’s a reflection of our strength in depth especially at home.

“There’s still a chance we’ve not seen the last of the Eagles this year and I’m sure they’ve picked up quite a bit of knowledge of our track, and I’m sure if we meet again it’ll be an excellent match.

“Whoever we choose, I'm confident it’ll be a great semi-final. We’re after the double this year, the league and the KOC, just like the Aces and we’re pumped up and ready to make that happen.”

While we await that fateful decision from the Colts’ management, the rentruck Aces are preparing to tackle their play off semi-final against the reigning champions the Wolverhampton Wolves.

The home leg has now been rearranged for Wednesday September 27 at 7:30pm. Tickets are available by clicking here and at the stadium ticket office on race night.
