Colts Inspired By Half-Time Hammering

The Belle Vue Colts are quietly confident ahead of the return leg of their Play Off semi-final against Lakeside, despite the Vortex Hammers' emphatic 16-point lead at the half-way point.

Tackling the away leg at Purfleet without Rob Shuttleworth, Dan Bewley, Jack Smith and Lee Payne was a big ask for the remaining members of the septet, who nonetheless got stuck right in.

After 12 heats the margin remained fairly respectable with the hosts leading by just 8, until three consecutive heat advantages in the final races of the evening saw that advantage double.

It means the Vortex Hammers bring a 16-point lead into next week’s stint at home, but even despite the daunting deficit colts reserve Andy Mellish is confident it is a realistic recovery.

He said: “It was a tough night but the odds were always against us when you consider we had four of our usual riders missing, but Steve, Graham and Mark did a great job securing guests.

“Everyone rode well and put in their shift. Connor Coles had a few mechanical issues but we kept on fighting nonetheless. But we have got quite a bit to do when next week comes around.

“Ideally we would’ve liked much less of a deficit going into the home leg but to be honest i don’t think it’s beyond us to pull that back; we’ve had some pretty big scores at home this season.

“Not many teams have come to our place and kept things to within the confines of such a margin so I think, given our track record at home, we have a fighting chance and we’ll give it our all.”

The Belle Vue Colts also have plenty to do in the second leg of their play off semi-final against Lakeside if they hope to continue their pursuit of the National League title this year.

They are back in action in Manchester next Friday October 6 at 7:30pm. Tickets available now at or from the ticket office
