No Gap Too Great

Just as was the case in their play off semi-final against Lakeside, Belle Vue have plenty to do to secure their spot in the National League KOC grand final after going down 53-37 at Mildenhall.

A heavily depleted Cool Running Colts side, who made the journey to West Row with only three of their regular septet, knew they had a challenge on their hands in this late season aggregate clash.

The loss of Andy Mellish after a crash at Eastbourne 24 hours earlier was further compounded when his replacement, Lewis Whitmore, suffered a similar fate and withdrew from the meeting.

But the riders who remained continued to dig deep and a last-gasp 5-1 from skipper Rob Shuttleworth and guest Mitchell Davey was enough to inspire a sense of ‘game on’ in leg two.

Team boss Graham Goodwin said: “Really it was a case of damage control from the start, which was not unexpected especially considering we were without Dan, Jack, Lee and sadly Andy too.

“Mildenhall have a well-established home advantage and they’re not easy to beat, particularly when you have to do it with only half your regular team. But as always, our guys did their best.

“We would’ve liked to have kept things closer and for a time things looked somewhat bleak, but that 5-1 in Heat 15 certainly put everyone in a better mood and gave us hope for the second leg.”

It’s a busy week across the board for Belle Vue with meetings on Monday, Wednesday and Friday before the club gathers for its end-of-season celebration, ‘The Maugers’ on October 21.

The Rentruck Aces tackle Wolverhampton on October 16 while the Cool Running Colts entertain Eastbourne and Mildenhall on October 18 and October 20 respectively.
