Talented Teens Aim To Impress

Local lad Joe Lawlor and rising star Kean Dicken are the next two names unveiled by Belle Vue’s National League side for the 2018 season, with only two more places to confirm.

Lawlor, who last year scooped the 2017 Northern Junior League Riders’ Championship title, is delighted to be back at his home club after spending the 2017 season with the Cradley Heathens.

A mascot of the Aces since he was 10, he fulfilled a lifelong ambition to launch his competitive career with the Colts in 2016 and insists his second spell with the club will be his greatest.

Lawlor said: “I feel a sense of belonging at Belle Vue. The club is right on my doorstep and I’ve pretty much grown up there so to say I’m happy to be back with the Colts is a huge understatement.

“But I think having some time away riding for Cradley did wonders for my development. I’ve got experience now that I didn’t have before and I want to put that to good use this year.”

Dicken made his British Speedway debut at the same time as Lawlor, though with Belle Vue’s Derbyshire neighbours Buxton, before joining the Birmingham Brummies in 2017.

The son of the long-serving Lee Dicken, whose career spans back more than 20 years, he is hoping to take advantage of his father’s experience to make an impression in Manchester.

Dicken said: “Breaking my leg at Birmingham’s press day ultimately left me without a team place but I continued to work hard, taking guest bookings and by the end of the year I felt brilliant.

“There was no question in my mind that if an opportunity to ride for Belle Vue came up I’d take it, so when I got the call I was absolutely elated. I’m really looking forward to riding for them.”

With Lawlor and Dicken joining Jack Smith, Kyle Bickley and Ben Woodhull, the Colts have only two names left to confirm. The club’s next Aces signing announcement will be January 29.
