Belle Vue pulled off a stunning 58-32 victory in the first leg of their Travel Plus National League KOC clash against Buxton, giving them a hefty 26-point lead going into the return fixture on April 22.
The evening was packed with drama right from the get go when the Hitmen pairing of Tom Woolley and David Wallinger tangled on the back straight in Heat 3, resulting in repairs to the safety fence.
Thankfully both were able to continue the meeting, but despite their resilience there was little they could do to make an impact on the dominant Cool Running Colts who commanded the meeting.
Kyle Bickley top scored for the home team with 14 points while Tom Perry added 11+1, but it was reserve Ben Woodhull who stole the show with a flawless paid 12-point maximum from four rides.
Woodhull said: “We wanted to take advantage of the home leg and we got the result we were aiming for from the start, but I don’t think any of us imagined we would come away with such a huge lead.
“Buxton put up a good fight but I think, having had a few meetings already, we put all the track time we’ve had so far to good use and it definitely showed in the performance of the whole team.
“I’m really happy with the meeting I had. I had a bit of a scare with a leg injury after I fell at Birmingham on Wednesday but thankfully it wasn’t so bad that I couldn’t race on Friday.
“We’re really looking forward to the return fixture. We have everything going for us but we know the tables can turn so we’re going to approach this as we always do and fight for every point.”
The Colts next head to Buxton’s High Edge home in Derbyshire on April 22, while the Rentruck Aces are back at the National Speedway Stadium on Monday April 23 against Rye House.
Tickets for both Belle Vue home fixtures are now on sale atwww.bellevueaces.co and at the stadium box office on race night.
