Feeling The Sting

A tough afternoon for reigning National League champions Belle Vue against Coventry saw them leave Beaumont Park empty-handed after suffering a 59-31 thumping despite their best efforts.

Conditions were far from ideal as Britain continues to swelter in the midst of a heatwave, and the Europress Bees took full advantage of their home track knowledge to take control of the meeting.

But the Cool Running Colts were determined not to back down and resolved to put everything they had into their performance to try and recover at least a consolation point from proceedings.

It was a tough ask in the end, already being without Kyle Bickley and with Tom Perry withdrawing due to illness it became a matter of pride with Jack Smith top-scoring for the visitors with 10.

Team boss Steve Williams said: “It was challenging, especially with the sun beating down on the track. It was slick and difficult to pass but the boys battled hard and that’s all we can ask of them.

“It was less than ideal losing Tom because he was scoring very well up to that point, and a couple of engine failures for Jack and Joe Lawlor only compounded things which came back to haunt us.

“We were struggling to make the gates whereas Coventry were having no such trouble. There’s no taking anything away from them. They were the better team on the day and deserved the win.

“We’re not disappointed in the boys though. They did everything they could but things didn’t go their way. We’ve just got to regroup, put this one to bed and look to bounce back in the next one.”

The Rentruck Aces travel to Poole this Wednesday, July 4 before heading home to Manchester on Monday, July 9 to face reigning champions Swindon at the National Speedway Stadium.

Tickets for the home fixture are now available at www.bellevueaces.co and at the stadium box office on race night.
