Aces Even the Score

Wolverhampton’s fortunes were quite the reverse of Monday when they visited the NSS on Wednesday night after Belle Vue put in an emphatic 56-34 victory over their Black Country rivals.

But the visitors had their moments and were not immediately overwhelmed by the Rentruck Aces’ dominance, in particular Sam Masters and Rory Schlein were causing plenty of upset on track.

Steve Worrall made a triumphant return to the home side with a win in his opening ride before completing his evening with 4+1 from four appearances in which he showed encouraging form.

There were pockets of drama in places, with Damian Drozdz involved in a  nasty-looking crash with Sam Masters in Heat 12 in which the two collided and the former was thrown from his bike.

Thankfully there seemed to be no lasting damage and it did nothing to hamper the Rentruck Aces’ momentum, with Max Fricke scoring a paid maximum while Rohan Tungate added 12+2.

Tungate said: “It’s always nice to beat Wolves. There’s a lot of rivalry between our two clubs but it’s a healthy one and we alway push each other hard, so to get the win is very satisfying.

“We actually had to do a coin toss between me and Dan [Bewley] for Heat 15 because Mark didn’t know who to put in! But I suppose that’s a good thing because it means we’re riding well.

“It was great to have Stevie back tonight. It’s been a while since we’ve been a full team and he scored some pretty crucial points that made all the difference to the momentum of our evening.

“It’s becoming absolutely crucial now, with the table so close, for us to be winning consistently at home and pulling in points on the road. We want to be in the play offs so every point counts.”

Belle Vue Speedway will celebrate its official 90th birthday on Saturday, July 28 with their Summer Speed Saturday event, featuring Round 5 of the British Youth Championship, at the NSS.

Also along for the celebrations will be demonstration laps from British Sidecar Speedway, Flat Track and the Blast from the Past riders. Tickets are £5 on the night, with the first race at 6pm.
