Aces Down But Not Out

King’s Lynn did not have it all their own way in their 49-41 win over Belle Vue at the Adrian Flux Arena on Wednesday, and again it came down to a last-heat decider for a winner to be declared.

The Rentruck Aces were keen to prove they’re still play off contenders, despite just falling short against the Tru Plant Stars on Monday, and gave the home team plenty to think about throughout.

And while King’s Lynn were favourites for the win, little more than 6 points separated the two sides going into the interval with Craig Cook and Max Fricke in blistering form for the visitors.

Mark Lemon’s tactical substitute, Fricke for Worrall, in Heat 11 paid dividends as he and Cook stormed to a critical 5-1, sending a clear warning to their rivals that Belle Vue were not done yet.

The meeting reached its crescendo in Heat 15 with only a 5-1 standing between the Rentruck Aces and a vital draw, but despite their best efforts there was to be no consolation point.

Team boss Mark Lemon said: “I think what’s most frustrating is the fact that, after coming so close, we were left to rue what could’ve been. We know we deserved a point, at minimum.

“Momentum was on our side in the closing stages and you could sense King’s Lynn knew they’d have a fight on their hands, and full credit to our boys because they dug in and kept the meeting alive.

“Unfortunately, a couple of them had a night well below their usual high standards and the Stars used that to their advantage. We’re by no means writing ourselves off for the play offs though.

“The task isn’t impossible, it’s just a bit harder now. We have to put this one behind us and shift our focus to next week because until the maths says we can’t make it, we’ll keep fighting.”

The Rentruck Aces have a busy week next week, with visits to Leicester, Somerset and Swindon while the Cool Running Colts take on Kent away on August 13 and then at home on August 15.

Tickets for the National League home fixture are now available online at www.bellevueaces.co and at the stadium box office on race night.
