Colts Conquer Islanders

Belle Vue’s penultimate National League gambit ended in a comprehensive 58-32 victory over the Isle of Wight in Manchester, enough for them to cling onto fourth in the table for the time being.

The Cool Running Colts were high on confidence ahead of the action at the National Speedway Stadium and were swift in their efforts to lay down a marker to their south coast rivals.

Even without club No.1 Kyle Bickley, there was little the Warriors could do to negate the momentum of the home team after they established a lead of over 10 points after six heats.

But the challengers pressed on and the night was not without drama, as Ben Woodhull exhibited his taste for acrobatics after flipping his bike while there was a clash of interests in Heat 13.

Skipper Jack Smith led the charge for the Cool Running Colts, top scoring with 13 points while Tom Perry followed up with an impressive 10+3 and Joe Lawlor added a hefty 9 points.

Lawlor said: “We knew at the start how crucial it was for us to bring home the win but we didn’t put any pressure on ourselves. We were feeling confident and had the belief that we could do it.

“The Isle of Wight aren’t necessarily one of the strongest teams but you can’t underestimate them. We knew they had the potential to be spoilers so we couldn’t afford to hold back.

“Obviously three points were an absolute must but there’s still an element of suspense around our top four ambitions. We’ve only got one meeting left to make a difference so we’ll keep fighting.”

The Cool Running Colts round off their domestic campaign ahead of the play offs on Monday, September 10 against the Kent Kings, when they journey down to Sittingbourne.

Then, the Rentruck Aces head to Somerset on September 12 for the first leg of their KOC semi-final with Somerset before returning to Manchester on September 19 for leg two.

Tickets for both home meetings are now available online at www.bellevueaces.co and at the stadium box office on race night.
